Bill of Sale

This is the receipt for the transaction, both buyer and seller will want a copy of this. A bill of sale can provide protection for both the buyer and seller as it proves that money was exchanged for a vehicle in case any titling issues or other paperwork problems come up in the future.

What If You Don’t Have Your Title or the Title is not in Your Name?

Selling a car without a title is illegal in the State of Texas. No legitimate buyer would buy a car if the seller doesn’t own the title. And under no circumstances agree to buy a car without a title.

What Should You Do After Selling Your Car?

Yes, that’s right, you should do the following after selling your car.

  1. File a release-of-liability form with your state DMV. This can be done by mail or online. Do Not Fail to do this step or you may be held liable for any tolls or accidents
  2. Make sure the bill of sale is signed by both you and the buyer, it is completed, and a copy is ready to be sent to the DMV.
  3. Take your license plates off the vehicle. Again, this protects you from liability.
  4. Remove all your personal items from the vehicle.
  5. Give both sets of keys to the buyer.
  6. Cancel the insurance on the car.

After all these steps are finished, you can finally say you have sold your car!
